Plot summary
In a nightmare, Harry Potter sees a Muggle caretaker, Frank Bryce, killed at the Riddle House by Lord Voldemort, Peter Pettigrew and a stranger. He then joins the Weasleys, Hermione Granger and Cedric Diggory at the Quidditch World Cup, where Death Eaters set tents alight and the Dark Mark hangs over the campsite. At Hogwarts, Albus Dumbledore tells the students that the Triwizard Tournament will be held there, with Durmstrang and Beauxbatons taking part. The Goblet of Fire will pick one champion from each school, and nobody under seventeen may enter. It names Fleur Delacour, Viktor Krum and Cedric, then adds Harry as a fourth champion. Many students think he cheated, and Ron Weasley keeps his distance from him. Because his name came out of the Goblet, a magical contract obliges Harry to compete.

- J. K. Rowling handed Chris Columbus, producer David Heyman and screenwriter Steve Kloves a huge manuscript setting out her plans for Goblet of Fire before the book was published, so they could prepare for how dark the series was about to become.
- Henry Cavill auditioned for Cedric Diggory before Robert Pattinson was cast, and Rosamund Pike turned down Rita Skeeter because the role was too minor, a decision she later regretted.
- Chris Columbus urged producer David Heyman to split the book into two films and Warner Bros. showed no interest, so Mike Newell fitted it into one by shooting it as a thriller, preparing by watching North by Northwest, The Parallax View and Three Days of the Condor.
- Costume designer Jany Temime made more than 300 costumes for the Yule Ball alone, and Hermione's fairy-tale dress took three months to make.
- For the second Triwizard task the crew built a blue screen tank 20 ft deep and 60 ft square, holding about half a million gallons of water, which is the largest underwater filming tank in Europe.
- The crew first tried faking the Black Lake dry, hanging the actors up and blowing wind at them, but the hair would not undulate convincingly. Daniel Radcliffe then trained for six months and spent more than 40 hours underwater across the three weeks of filming.
- A Canadian folk group called the Wyrd Sisters sued Warner Bros. for US$40 million over the wizard band's name and sought an injunction to stop the film opening in Canada. An Ontario judge dismissed the motion, but the studio left the band unnamed in the film and in many spin-off products.
