Plot summary

Harry Potter's summer with his aunt and uncle is interrupted when Dobby, a house-elf, warns him of danger at Hogwarts and wrecks a dinner with Uncle Vernon's client to keep him from returning. Ron Weasley and his brothers Fred and George pull up in their father's flying car and carry him off. In Diagon Alley, Harry and Hermione Granger meet Gilderoy Lockhart, the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, and run into Draco Malfoy and his father Lucius. Blocked from Platform Nine and Three-Quarters, Harry and Ron take the car to Hogwarts and hit the Whomping Willow, breaking Ron's wand. During detention he hears a strange voice and finds the caretaker's cat petrified beneath a warning written in blood about a chamber that only Salazar Slytherin's heir can open.
