Biography

Born in New York City, Jon Favreau is an American actor and filmmaker who began performing at Chicago improvisational theaters before landing his first film role in Rudy (1993). He broke through as an actor and screenwriter with Swingers (1996), then appeared in movies such as Deep Impact (1998), The Replacements (2000), Daredevil (2003), The Break-Up (2006), Couples Retreat (2009), I Love You, Man (2009), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), and Chef (2014). He made his directorial debut with Made (2001) and went on to direct Elf (2003), Iron Man (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), The Jungle Book (2016), and The Lion King (2019). In the Marvel Cinematic Universe he played Happy Hogan in films including Iron Man, Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), and Deadpool & Wolverine (2024). He created The Mandalorian with Dave Filoni and has received an Emmy Award and two Saturn Awards.

  1. A role that slipped away

    Favreau came on as the third director for John Carter, based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' space hero. He didn't end up directing the film, but he played a bookie in a cameo.

  2. First role

    While in Chicago, Favreau got his first film role as D-Bob, a tutor, in the sleeper hit Rudy (1993) with Sean Astin. During shooting he met Vince Vaughn, who had a small part.

  3. Big break

    Favreau moved to Los Angeles, where the 1996 film Swingers brought him his breakthrough as an actor-screenwriter. The movie also gave Vaughn his breakthrough, playing Trent Walker, a foil to Favreau's heartbroken Mike Peters.

    Jon Favreau made his film directorial debut in 2001 with Made, a self-penned screenplay that teamed him again with Swingers co-star Vince Vaughn.

  5. A first

    Favreau's first musical as a director was Disney's CGI Lion King, which came out in July 2019. Donald Glover supplied Simba's voice, while James Earl Jones returned as Mufasa, the part he had played in the original.

  6. Behind the camera

    Jon Favreau created the television production company Golem Creations on August 30, 2018, naming it after the golem because he saw technology as something that could protect or destroy if control was lost; it produced The Mandalorian and other Star Wars shows.
