Plot summary
John Person is an out-of-work actor in Los Angeles carrying $27,000 in credit card debt. His odd neighbor Neely offers him the money to deliver a blue suitcase to Baker, a small town in the desert, and hand it to a man known as Cowboy. John takes the job. At his motel in Baker he misses Cowboy, and the desert town fills in around him: Elron, the peppy manager; Stella, who tends the bar; Dan, a trucker with theories about the place; and Ruthie, whose boyfriend Randy reacts violently when anyone looks at her. While John waits for Cowboy to appear, a bowling ball bag arrives in his room, and he is told not to open it.
