Plot summary
Peter Colt, a British professional in his thirties, has watched his ranking fall from 11th in the world to 119th, and he has a reputation for losing the big matches. His family's money made his tennis career comfortable, and he has a wild card into Wimbledon, which he expects to be his last tournament before he takes a job at a tennis club. Lizzie Bradbury, an American, is playing her first Wimbledon and is talked about as a possible champion. A mix-up over a hotel key brings them together, and they begin a casual relationship at the tournament. Peter's play improves, while Dennis Bradbury, Lizzie's father and coach, sees it as a threat to her game.

- Kirsten Dunst was under contract with Harvey Weinstein at Miramax and agreed to do the film to complete that contract, on condition that she could select her costar. She selected Paul Bettany.
- Some scenes were filmed during the 2003 Championships between matches - the only time in the history of the Wimbledon tournament that this has been allowed.
- The actors served with real tennis balls during filming, and all the other players seen on court were added digitally to make it appear like they were playing.
- The film is dedicated to Mark McCormack, founder of International Management Group, a management firm for high-level athletes, who died on 16 May 2003.
