Plot summary
Han gets his hands on coaxium and plans to buy passage off Corellia for himself and Qi'ra, away from Lady Proxima and her White Worms gang. Proxima's minions catch the pair at the spaceport; Han gets through the gate, Qi'ra does not, and he promises to come back for her. He enlists in the Imperial Navy, where a recruitment officer gives him the surname Solo. Three years on, he is fighting on Mimban as an Imperial infantryman when he falls in with Tobias Beckett, Val, and Rio Durant, thieves posing as soldiers. When Han tries to force his way into their crew, Beckett arranges to have him taken away and dropped into a pit. There he meets the Wookiee prisoner Chewbacca; the two escape together, and Beckett brings them along on a coaxium robbery.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Lucasfilm fired directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller in June 2017, months into shooting Solo, after Kathleen Kennedy and Lawrence Kasdan disagreed with their improvisational style; the pair believed they had been hired to make a comedy.
- After Howard reshot around 70% of the film, Lord and Miller gave up any challenge for director credit and instead took executive producer credits.
- Michael K. Williams was unable to return for the reshoots because of a schedule conflict with The Red Sea Diving Resort, so his part was redeveloped and recast with Paul Bettany, who had heard Howard was directing and texted him to ask for a role.
- Lucas, Howard's friend and mentor, made a surprise visit on Howard's first day of shooting and stayed the whole day; forgetting not to interfere, he suggested an action for Han Solo that Howard included in the film.
- The train-heist explosion was created by blowing up firecrackers inside a 3D model of the mountain in a large fish tank built at Pinewood Studios, copying an experiment by Gavin Free and Daniel Gruchy of The Slow Mo Guys.
- More than 3,000 actors tried out for young Han Solo, among them Charlie Cox, Tom Felton, Rami Malek and Jack O'Connell; director Miller called it one of the hardest casting challenges of all time.
- Peter Serafinowicz, Maul's original voice in The Phantom Menace, recorded dialogue for Solo but was replaced by Sam Witwer, whose take Lucasfilm decided was better for continuity.
- The film was the first in the Star Wars series to become a box-office bomb, ending its run with a worldwide gross of $393 million.
