Plot summary

Mike Peters moved from New York to Los Angeles to work as a comedian, and six months after his girlfriend of six years, Michelle, ended things, he is still miserable. His friend Rob tells him that women somehow sense they should not call an ex until they have fully moved on. His womanizing friend Trent talks Mike into a spur-of-the-moment trip to Las Vegas, where he chats up two waitresses. Mike talks about Michelle instead, and the mood sours. In Los Angeles again, Mike, Rob, Trent, Sue and Charles fill their days with nights out, video games and golf. At an after-hours spot, Trent shows off his way with women, and Mike, encouraged, talks to Nikki and comes away with her number. His friends urge him to wait two days before calling.

While Favreau raised money for the film, some producers pushed to turn the character Trent into a woman, cut the Las Vegas trip and make the story darker, while others wanted bigger stars like Johnny Depp or Chris O'Donnell in the lead, but Favreau turned all of it down.
Vince Vaughn landed his role in The Lost World: Jurassic Park after Steven Spielberg saw Swingers, which had originally been sent to him just to clear the rights to use the Jaws theme music.
Jon Favreau wrote the Swingers screenplay in about two weeks after his father gave him a screenwriting computer program, initially just to see if he could do it as an exercise.
Mikey's apartment in the film was Favreau's real-life apartment at the time, in the Franklin Village area of Los Angeles, and the car was Favreau's own 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente convertible, bought after his previous car had been stolen and stripped.
The film's "you're so money" catchphrase originated from a television commercial with Spike Lee and Michael Jordan in which Lee called Jordan "money".
After some negotiations the filmmakers sold Swingers to Miramax for $5 million, although director Doug Liman recalls the price being $5.5 million.
