Plot summary
Matt Murdock loses his sight to toxic waste as a boy, and the accident sharpens his remaining senses. He grows up in Hell's Kitchen, where he practices law with his friend Franklin "Foggy" Nelson, taking on clients he believes are innocent, and spends his nights as the masked vigilante Daredevil. Ben Urich, a reporter for the New York Post, writes about the Kingpin, a hidden figure who controls the city's organized crime. Matt begins a romance with Elektra Natchios, a martial artist and the daughter of Nikolas Natchios, a wealthy man who has dealings with the Kingpin. The Kingpin hires Bullseye, an assassin known for perfect aim.

- Before Ben Affleck was cast as Daredevil, Vin Diesel turned the role down for another film, Guy Pearce declined it because "comic-strip stuff isn't really my cup of tea," and Matt Damon said he and Affleck loved the comic but did not believe in the script or director at the time.
- For Elektra, the filmmakers considered Kate Winslet, Penelope Cruz, Salma Hayek, Natalie Portman, Lucy Liu, Jessica Alba and Katie Holmes before narrowing the choice to Jennifer Garner, Jolene Blalock, Mia Maestro and Rhona Mitra, with Garner ultimately landing the part.
- Michael Clarke Duncan, who weighed 290 pounds when cast as Kingpin, was asked to gain another 40 pounds for the role and did it by lifting weights for 30 minutes a day, power-lifting daily and eating whatever he wanted.
- Fox wanted to shoot Daredevil in Canada to cut costs, but director Mark Steven Johnson and cinematographer Ericson Core fought to film in downtown Los Angeles's Arcade Building instead, and Ben Affleck's own dislike of shooting in Canada helped convince the studio to change its mind.
- Malaysia's Film Censorship Board banned Daredevil outright over its violence, and 20th Century Fox's appeal to have the ban lifted before its planned February 27, 2003 release there was unsuccessful.
- Ben Affleck won the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actor for his Daredevil performance, the third time he had won that award, following earlier wins for Gigli and Paycheck.
- Ben Affleck came to dislike and disown Daredevil, and said the experience of making a bad superhero film pushed him to take on Batman in Batman v Superman so he could finally "do it right."
- The 2004 director's cut added a subplot with a drug addict played by Coolio who is accused of killing a prostitute informant feeding information to reporter Ben Urich; the subplot was cut from theaters but survives in the 2003 novelization by Greg Cox.
