Plot summary
Peter Klaven sells real estate in Los Angeles. After eight months of dating, he proposes to Zooey Rice and she accepts, and the couple start planning a wedding. Zooey has plenty of close friends for her half of the party, but Peter has no male friend close enough to stand as his best man, and he overhears her friends discussing it. His younger brother Robbie gives him advice on meeting men, and Peter makes awkward approaches to several of them, among them Barry, the husband of Zooey's friend Denise. While hosting an open house at Lou Ferrigno's mansion, Peter meets Sydney Fife, an investor who came for the free food. The two bond over the band Rush and start spending time together.

- The script for I Love You, Man, originally titled Let's Be Friends by Larry Levin, sat unused for about 11 years after being bought; director John Hamburg kept turning it down until his own experience of trying to make new friends after his pals moved to Los Angeles convinced him to finally make it.
- A daughter of late Egyptian President Anwar Sadat sued the filmmakers in Egypt because a character's dog is named after her father, with a line joking that the dog and Sadat 'look exactly alike'; her lawyer, Samir Sabri, demanded the US embassy apologize.
- Getting the band Rush to appear as themselves meant filming in a single one-day gap between two stops on their concert tour, a tight schedule the band said afterward that they had enjoyed.
- Paul Rudd and Jason Segel kept reprising their characters Peter and Sydney at real Rush concerts for years afterward, including Rudd conducting the band's onstage string section during 'YYZ' at the close of the 2013 Clockwork Angels Tour.
