Plot summary
Charles Darwin, the English naturalist, came home from the Galapagos Islands fifteen years ago and has still not finished the manuscript that sets out his theory of evolution. He lives in a village with his wife Emma, whose religious faith puts her at odds with his ideas; she fears that heaven will separate them for eternity. Their eldest daughter, Annie, a curious ten-year-old, is the child he taught about nature and his travels, and the clergyman's punishment of her for contradicting him about dinosaurs angers him. Darwin is ill, and Annie comes to him in visions that urge him toward the work he cannot complete.
