Plot summary

During the Second World War, German forces arrest people at random on the streets of Paris, and in reprisal for sabotage carried out by the resistance they announce that one prisoner in ten is to be executed. Chavel, a wealthy lawyer in Paris, is held in a German prison and is among those chosen. A fellow prisoner agrees to take Chavel's name and face execution in his stead, provided that the whole of Chavel's money passes to his family. Chavel accepts and hands over everything he owns; the other man's name becomes his, and with it the remainder of the other man's sentence, which he serves out in the prison.
