Plot summary
In Paris in 1919, Amedeo Modigliani, an Italian painter, loves Jeanne Hébuterne, a young French Catholic woman, and they have a child. Her father arranges for the baby to be raised by nuns in a convent far away. Modigliani is distraught and has no money to bring the child back. Paris holds its yearly art competition, which offers the winner money and a career. Modigliani and his rival Pablo Picasso have never entered, both holding the contest beneath genuine artists. In a café frequented by artists, drunk and under the influence of drugs, Modigliani adds his name to the roster, and Picasso signs as well. Modigliani begins work on his entry, knowing that artists across the city are doing the same.
