Plot summary
In Marseille, the mobster Lucien Galgani forces the boxer Alain Lefèvre to throw a fight, and Alain wins it instead. Galgani's girlfriend Katrina is the fiancée Alain once left at the altar; she forgives him, and the two make plans for America. The escape falls through, and Alain signs up for the French Foreign Legion, which ships him to North Africa to defend French territory against a Berber resistance of Rif warriors. In the ranks he meets Luther Williams, an African American who fled injustice in the American South, Mackintosh, a onetime British Army major dishonorably discharged for passing bad checks to cover gambling, and Guido Rosetti, a naive young Italian eager to return home a hero to his fiancée Anna.

- Jean-Claude Van Damme originally pitched Legionnaire as a more humorous film, a vehicle for himself and a comedian such as John Candy, in which his character joins the French Foreign Legion to escape from the mob.
- Director Peter MacDonald and producer Edward R. Pressman scrapped an alternate ending in which Van Damme's Alain rescues Ana Sofrenović's Katrina and kills Jim Carter's Lucien Galgani at a New Year's Eve party, because they felt it was too violent.
