Plot summary
King Lear rules a militarized 21st-century London. One evening he gathers his family to announce that his realm will be split among his three daughters. Goneril and Regan each proclaim their devotion to their father, and each receives a portion of it. The youngest, Cordelia, finds spoken pledges of that kind hollow and offers nothing comparable, so no part of the inheritance is left for her; it passes entirely to her two elder sisters, and she is married to the King of France without a dowry. In a separate strand, Edmund, the illegitimate son of the Earl of Gloucester, exploits the trust of his brother Edgar to win their father's confidence, and Edgar is driven from home and court.
