Biography

Elizabeth McGovern is an American actress who trained at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco and at Juilliard before making her film debut in Ordinary People (1980). She grew up mostly in Los Angeles, and her turn as Evelyn Nesbit in Ragtime (1981) earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Lead roles followed in Once Upon a Time in America (1984), The Bedroom Window (1987), She's Having a Baby (1988), The Handmaid's Tale (1990) and The Wings of the Dove (1997). Her honors include three Screen Actors Guild Awards and nominations for an Emmy, a BAFTA and two Golden Globes. She played Cora Crawley in the British series Downton Abbey, a part she reprised in three films: Downton Abbey (2019), its sequel Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022), and Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale (2025). She also fronts the band Sadie and the Hotheads and produced The Chaperone (2019).

    After high school, McGovern went to the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. From 1979 to 1981 she was in Group 12 at the Juilliard School in New York City, working toward a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama, but she left without a degree.
