Plot summary
The Ripper case in West Yorkshire has run for six years, and a serial killer has now claimed a thirteenth victim there. Rumors of corruption inside the West Yorkshire force surround the inquiry. The Home Office turns to Manchester, bringing in Peter Hunter, an Assistant Chief Constable there, to carry out a quiet review of the Ripper inquiry and to see what the local police may have missed. West Yorkshire is told to cooperate with him and with the two hand-picked associates he brings with him. Hunter gets little help from the West Yorkshire officers and continues with the review. Christmas approaches.
