Plot summary
Tony Thompson is thirteen and on holiday in rural Germany with his parents, fascinated by vampires and troubled by nightmares about them. In the countryside he meets Rudolph Sackville-Bagg, called Rudi, a vampire who looks his age but is 313 and was raised to believe that every mortal is a heartless killer. Childish curiosity, and the lack of anyone else their own age, make the two boys friends. The vampire hunter Rookery has tracked Rudi's clan down, and all of the family apart from Rudi's parents, Frederick and Freda, and his sister Anna, is imprisoned in a crypt, with Rookery determined to destroy them.
