Plot summary
Tony Thompson is nine when his family leaves California for a small castle in Scotland, where his father Bob is building a golf course on Lord McAshton's estate. Nightmares about vampires and a comet trouble him, and Lord McAshton's grandsons Flint and Nigel pick on him at school. One night, dressed as a vampire, Tony is taken for one by Rudolph Sackville-Bagg, a young vampire on the run from Rookery, a vampire hunter. The two boys become friends. Rudolph's family, who live in a cemetery and drink animal blood, want to become human, and Rudolph says they seek a magical amulet with the power to change them. Rookery wants that amulet too. Frederick, Rudolph's father, doubts Tony's loyalty, but Tony's access to the daytime world makes him useful.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- An animated film, The Little Vampire 3D, followed in 2017, loosely based on the 2000 live-action film and produced, written and directed by Richard Claus, the live-action film's producer; Jim Carter and Alice Krige reprised their roles as Rookery and Freda Sackville-Bagg.
- The film was a box-office disappointment, grossing $28 million against its $35 million budget and failing to earn back what it had cost to make.
- The Dutch Eurodance group Vengaboys released the song "Shalala Lala" as a single, and it is included in the film's soundtrack album.
SPOILER
Angela Sommer-Bodenburg, author of the original book series, found the film beautiful, atmospheric, funny, clever and well-made, but criticized its ending, in which the vampires become human again: in her books the tragedy lies in their inability to become human.
