Biography

Robert Wagner is an American actor who was born in Detroit and moved to Los Angeles with his family in 1937. He first appeared on screen uncredited in The Happy Years (1950), then signed with 20th Century Fox and took supporting parts in Halls of Montezuma (1951) and The Frogmen (1951). His first leading part came with Beneath the 12-Mile Reef (1953), and he later starred in Prince Valiant (1954) and A Kiss Before Dying (1956). His film work also included Harper (1966), The Towering Inferno (1974), The Pink Panther (1963), and The Concorde... Airport '79 (1979). On television he starred in It Takes a Thief, Switch, and Hart to Hart, earning an Emmy nomination for the first, and he later played Number 2 in the Austin Powers trilogy and had recurring parts on Two and a Half Men and NCIS.

    Wagner's first starring role came in Beneath the 12-Mile Reef (1953), which was only the third movie ever shot in CinemaScope and became a big hit despite poor reviews.

    Wagner turned down the chance to audition for James Bond on the advice of his friend and agent Albert Broccoli, deciding the part was not right for him.

    Wagner first acted in a theater after coming back to America, taking the lead in Mister Roberts for a week at a holiday resort near Chicago. The disciplines of the theater did not interest him.

    Wagner produced the made-for-TV film Madame Sin and cast himself opposite Bette Davis in it. The film was released in theaters overseas as a feature film.

    Wagner's part in The Interns went to James MacArthur, and the planned film Solo was never made, while The Comancheros was instead made with John Wayne and Stuart Whitman.

    Blake Edwards directed The Great Race (1965) and wanted Wagner for the lead, but Jack L. Warner overruled him, so Wagner did not get the part.
