Plot summary
Connie and Joe Bedloe live in a Maine college town, where Joe teaches poetry at Mathers College and earns little. Connie is pregnant, and her obstetrician advises a diet of meat, which the household budget will not stretch to on Joe's salary. Joe is one of two men at the college qualified for a promotion to assistant professor, but he wants it on his teaching merits, and he will not court Dean Edward Magruder with dinners, as his rival Simmons does. Joe's father Opie, a West Texas cattleman who wants to retire, arrives unannounced to make the case, though father and son fell out long ago.
