Plot summary
The Sherwood sisters, Ruth and Eileen, leave Columbus, Ohio, for New York City and rent a basement studio in a Greenwich Village building that Papa Appopoulos owns. Ruth wants to write; Eileen wants to act. Their neighbor Ted Loomis is an athlete engaged to Helen Wade. A letter of introduction takes Ruth to Bob Baker, who edits Manhatter magazine, but he is about to leave on vacation and tells her to write about what she knows rather than the invented stories she has been sending him. Wearied by a theatre producer's unwanted advances, Eileen eats at a Walgreens counter, where Frank Lippincott, who runs the soda fountain, listens to her troubles and offers his help. Rejection slips pile up for Ruth, and auditions do not come for Eileen.

- When Columbia's Harry Cohn could not afford the rights to the Broadway hit Wonderful Town, he hired Jule Styne and Leo Robin for a new score and assigned a studio attorney to ensure the film bore no resemblance to the musical, even repositioning its songs in the storyline.
- Richard Quine, who directed and co-wrote the film, first cast Judy Holliday as Ruth Sherwood, but her contract dispute with the studio brought in Betty Garrett, unofficially blacklisted over husband Larry Parks's Communist Party past, giving Garrett her first screen role in six years.
- Aldo Ray turned down the role of athlete Ted Loomis because he considered the part too small, and it went instead to Dick York, a Columbia contract star.
