Plot summary
In Kansas City in 1927, cornetist Pete Kelly and his Big Seven play nightly at the 17 Club, a speakeasy. Crime boss Fran McCarg is expanding his hold over the local music scene and wants a share of what the band earns. Kelly decides to refuse him. After the last set one night, the club manager, Rudy, sends Kelly and the band to a party at the mansion of Ivy Conrad, a wealthy flapper known for rowdy gatherings. Kelly leaves a message there for McCarg to call, but the call is taken by Joey Firestone, the band's drunk, hot-tempered drummer, who turns McCarg down abusively. Unknown assailants force the band's car off the road as they drive back to town.
