Biography

Torin Thatcher was a character actor who often played tough, commanding, and sinister figures, a specialty that suited his imposing presence. Born in Bombay, India, to British parents and educated in England, he first worked as a schoolteacher, appeared on the London stage in 1927, and entered British films in 1934. Early screen credits included Sabotage (1936), Major Barbara (1941), Great Expectations (1946), and The Fallen Idol (1948). In Hollywood from the 1950s, he was in demand for popular costumers such as The Crimson Pirate (1952), Blackbeard, the Pirate (1952), The Robe (1953), Helen of Troy (1956), Witness for the Prosecution (1957), The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958), and Hawaii (1966). He also acted frequently on Broadway and television, including made-for-TV films. He died in 1981.
