Joi Lansing
Biography
Joi Lansing was an American actress and model who also sang in nightclubs. She started modeling as a teenager and was signed by MGM after the producer Arthur Freed spotted her. She began appearing in films in 1947 and had an uncredited part in Singin' in the Rain (1952). She was often cast in the glamorous B-movie parts that also went to Jayne Mansfield and Mamie Van Doren, among them Queen of Outer Space (1958) and The Atomic Submarine (1959). She appeared in the comedies A Hole in the Head (1959) and Who Was That Lady? (1960), and in Orson Welles's Touch of Evil (1958) she played Zita, the dancer in the film's long opening shot. Her final film was Bigfoot (1970). On television she was a regular on The Bob Cummings Show and worked in more than seventy series, and she was given a Walk of Fame star in Hollywood for her television work. She died in 1972.

Lansing was discovered at age 14 by MGM producer Arthur Freed and signed to the studio's talent school contract, where she finished high school on the lot.
A role that slipped away
In 1967, Lansing took Mamie Van Doren's role in Hillbillys in a Haunted House, acting alongside Basil Rathbone and John Carradine. She had passed up the opportunity to step in for Jayne Mansfield in The Ice House, a 1969 horror film.
Beyond film
Lansing began singing in nightclubs during the early 1960s, as trade magazines documented. She also performed with the Xavier Cugat orchestra and went on a brief tour with Les Paul.
