Plot summary
Laurie Strode survived Michael Myers in Haddonfield and has spent twenty years hiding under a new name, Keri Tate. She heads Hillcrest Academy, a boarding school in Summer Glen, California, where she raises her son, John. Norma Watson is her secretary, and Will Brennan, the school's guidance counselor, is her boyfriend. Alcohol and nightmares trouble her, and she dreads her brother finding her. As Halloween approaches, the faculty and students prepare for a trip to Yosemite, and Laurie refuses to let John go. John's friends Molly, Charlie and Sarah stay on campus for a party instead. Security guard Ronny Jones patrols as the school empties. Michael, thought dead since 1978, takes a car from a woman at a highway rest stop.

Jamie Lee Curtis nearly quit Halloween H20 weeks before filming because Moustapha Akkad held a clause barring Michael Myers's death; she stayed after Kevin Williamson invented the paramedic storyline, on condition the film hint at no sequel and leave audiences believing Michael was dead.- Dimension Films chief Bob Weinstein disliked John Ottman's score and ordered musical changes, adding Creed's rock song "What's This Life For" to a party scene and the end credits.
- As Janet Leigh's character Norma Watson walks to her car, the same model she drove in Psycho, Bernard Herrmann's Psycho score is quoted in tribute.
- Dr. Loomis's speech in the film repeats a monologue from the original Halloween, but the original recording could not be sampled because it could not be separated from its soundtrack, so sound-alike Tom Kane supplied the voice instead of Donald Pleasence.
- The closing credits carry an in memoriam tribute to Donald Pleasence, but his surname is misspelled as "Pleasance."
