Plot summary
Meg, Jo, Amy and Beth March live with their mother in genteel poverty in Concord, Massachusetts, while their father serves in the Union Army. Marmee, as the girls call her, teaches them to give to people poorer than themselves. Amy complains about the family's want of money and status, Jo writes stories and plays that entertain the household, and the shy youngest, Beth, plays an out-of-tune piano. Jo, who prefers male company to girls', becomes friends with Theodore Laurence, known as Laurie, the grandson of their wealthy and cantankerous neighbor James Laurence. Mr. Laurence invites the sisters to a ball at his house, where Laurie's tutor, John Brooke, takes an interest in Meg.

- David O. Selznick was set to produce the film with Jennifer Jones as Jo, Diana Lynn as Amy, Bambi Linn as Beth, Rhonda Fleming as Meg and Anne Revere as Marmee, but after the ordeal of filming Duel in the Sun he sold the property and script to MGM.
- In the novel the four March sisters' ages span just five years, but the film cast actresses whose ages span 20: Janet Leigh, June Allyson, Margaret O'Brien and Elizabeth Taylor, born 1927, 1917, 1937 and 1932.
- The film marked the American film debut of Italian actor Rossano Brazzi and the final film appearance of C. Aubrey Smith, who died in 1948.
