Betty Garrett
Biography
Betty Garrett was an American actress, singer, dancer, and comedian who began in Broadway revues and later signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Born in Saint Joseph, Missouri, she moved to Seattle shortly after birth, and she won a Donaldson Award for Call Me Mister, which led to an MGM contract. Her musical films included On the Town (1949), Take Me Out to the Ball Game (1949), Neptune's Daughter (1949), Words and Music (1948), and My Sister Eileen (1955). She became known for playing Irene Lorenzo on All in the Family, a role that won her a 1974 Golden Globe, and Edna Babish on Laverne & Shirley. Later television work included The Golden Girls, Boston Public, Becker, which brought an Emmy nomination, and Grey's Anatomy. She also returned to Broadway in the 2001 revival of Follies and was honored with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 2003.

A role that slipped away
Garrett appeared with Janet Leigh and Jack Lemmon in My Sister Eileen, a 1955 musical remake. She landed the role after Judy Holliday left the project because of a contract dispute.
First role
Garrett first appeared on Broadway in 1942, in the revue Of V We Sing. It ran for 76 performances before closing, but that same year she was cast in Harold Rome's revue Let Freedom Sing.
Big break
Garrett's performance won her the Donaldson Award and critical praise, which led Al Hirschfeld to caricature her in The New York Times. Louis B. Mayer then signed her to a one-year Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer contract.
Behind the camera
Garrett helped start Theatre West. There she took the director's chair for Arthur Miller's The Price and also acted in Waiting in the Wings.
