Plot summary
Noël, the Marquis de Maynes, is asked by Marie Antoinette, his cousin on the throne, to learn who writes as Marcus Brutus, and she presses him to marry, offering Aline de Gavrilac, one of her wards, as his bride. Elsewhere in France, André Moreau carries off Lénore to stop her from marrying another man, and the two plan a wedding of their own. André then discovers that his friend Philippe de Valmorin is Marcus Brutus, in hiding for his pamphlets, and sends him out of Paris with Lénore. He also forces his lawyer Fabien to reveal the name of his father, since his allowance has stopped. When the marquis provokes Philippe into a duel and kills him, André attacks, is disarmed repeatedly, takes up a pistol and swears to kill the marquis in the same manner.

- Scaramouche was first planned as a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer musical starring Gene Kelly, with Ava Gardner as Lénore and Elizabeth Taylor as Aline, before it was reworked into a swashbuckling adventure film.
- Stewart Granger, who performed most of his own stunts, trained with fencing master Jean Heremans. The eight-minute duel between Granger and Mel Ferrer took eight weeks of preparation, including memorizing eighty-seven fencing passes, and left Granger with a wrenched knee, a damaged shoulder and an injured back.
- Eleanor Parker said Stewart Granger was the only person in her career she did not get along with, calling him a dreadful person and "rude ... just awful", and said everyone disliked him.
- Stewart Granger got the lead in Scaramouche because, when MGM signed him after the success of King Solomon's Mines, one of his contract stipulations was that he star in the then-upcoming project.
- A chandelier dropped for a scene hit the mattress Stewart Granger was supposed to lie on and embedded itself in the stage; he had insisted on seeing it dropped once before shooting. Jean Simmons, visiting her husband Granger, also nearly took a sword in the face.
- Mel Ferrer said the film contained seven duels, each one different with no repeated sequence, and that performing them was like learning seven ballets.
