Plot summary
Heathcliff, an orphan, is taken in by the Earnshaws and grows up at Wuthering Heights with Cathy, his foster sister. The two become close, and Heathcliff comes to love her. Mr. Earnshaw's son Hindley is persecuted by his father and lives in Heathcliff's shadow. Nelly Dean, the narrator, is in love with Hindley and hides it because of the difference in their class. Cathy, under the pressure of social convention, weds Edgar Linton, a man of means, and Heathcliff determines to win her back. When Heathcliff is first introduced, the film suggests he may be Mr. Earnshaw's illegitimate son. This version tells only the first part of the novel, leaving out the next generation.
