Plot summary
On the crossing from the West Indies to England, a missionary's widow named Olivia Harwood is asked to help nurse malarial patients below decks. One of them is Mark Bellis, a painter who recovers by the time the ship docks but stays vague about his life and his past. The two strike up a friendship, and he persuades her to give him rooms in the lodging house she inherited from her late husband. There he sets about charming her, and he also uses his charms on Kitty Feathers. Olivia has fallen under his spell, and money is short. Mark urges her to insinuate herself into the household of her wealthy former schoolfriend Susan Courtney, who is worn down by the cold criticisms of her older husband Henry.
