Plot summary
A book of spells and charms left by her gypsy mother is what Hazel Woodus consults when she faces trouble. She lives in the Shropshire countryside in 1897 and understands wild animals far better than the people around her. Jack Reddin, the local squire, has seen Hazel and wants her. She has promised herself to Edward Marston, a Baptist minister.

- American coproducer David O. Selznick dictated long, rambling notes to his directors while under the influence of amphetamines, flooding the production of Gone to Earth with memos, most of which were ignored.
- In the American version, The Wild Heart, one of Selznick's most infamous additions has Jennifer Jones supposedly carrying a tame fox at the end, but in the added scenes the fox is obviously a stuffed toy.
- Selznick sued The Archers, the production company of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, to force changes to Gone to Earth; he lost the court case but discovered he had the right to change the film for its American release.
- Michael Powell claimed that Selznick kept only about 35 minutes of the original Gone to Earth in the American version, The Wild Heart, and that everything else in it was shot by director Rouben Mamoulian.
