Jack MacGowran
Biography
Jack MacGowran was an Irish actor known for his stage interpretations of Samuel Beckett and Sean O'Casey. Born in Dublin, he started in theater with an operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan at the Gaiety Theatre before joining the Abbey Players. He played Lucky in Waiting for Godot and appeared in Endgame with the Royal Shakespeare Company; Beckett wrote the television play Eh Joe for him, and he won an Obie for the off-Broadway show MacGowran in the Works of Beckett. He also created Joxer in the Broadway musical Juno and later played Gandhi on Broadway. In film, MacGowran appeared in The Quiet Man (1952), Darby O'Gill and the Little People (1959), and Tom Jones (1963). Roman Polanski cast him in Cul-De-Sac (1966) and wrote the role of Professor Abronsius in The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967) for him. His final film was The Exorcist (1973), in which he played Burke Dennings.

Samuel Beckett wrote the television play Eh Joe specifically for MacGowran, who appears on the cover of its published edition.
Big break
Roman Polanski gave MacGowran the role of gangster Albie in Cul-de-sac in 1966. Polanski then made the part of Professor Abronsius in The Fearless Vampire Killers especially for him.
Beyond film
MacGowran put out an LP record titled MacGowran Speaking Beckett. Its release was timed to match Samuel Beckett's 60th birthday in 1966.
A change of course
Before becoming an actor, MacGowran worked for Hibernian Insurance. His stage debut came at the Gaiety Theatre, in an operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan.
