Percy Herbert

Biography

Percy Herbert was an English actor born in east London in 1920. After the war, with help from Sybil Thorndike, he interviewed at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and earned a scholarship there. He began on stage, including at John Gielgud's Old Vic Company, then moved into film in 1954 and eventually appeared in 78 pictures. He was often cast as soldiers, as in The Cockleshell Heroes (1955) and The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957); on that production he also worked as a paid consultant and was the one who proposed using the Colonel Bogey March. Other war films included The Guns of Navarone (1961), Tobruk (1967), and The Wild Geese (1978). Herbert also handled comedy, fantasy, drama, and science fiction, with credits such as Becket (1964), One Million Years B.C. (1966), and Mysterious Island (1961). On television he was a regular on Cimarron Strip and appeared in Danger Man, The Saint, and Z-Cars.
