Biography

Finlay Currie was a Scottish actor whose stage, screen and television career spanned about seventy years. Born in Edinburgh, he studied at George Watson's College and earned a living as an organist and choir director before joining Benjamin Fuller's theater group in 1898 for nearly a decade. After emigrating to the United States he performed a song-and-dance act, and his screen debut came in 1931 with The Old Man. He was best known for playing Abel Magwitch, the convict, in David Lean's Great Expectations (1946), and drew praise for his John Brown, Queen Victoria's highland attendant, in The Mudlark. Later he played Saint Peter in Quo Vadis (1951), the magus Balthazar in Ben-Hur (1959) and an elderly senator in The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964). He also appeared on television, and seven of his films were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, including the winners Around the World in Eighty Days (1956) and Ben-Hur.
