Plot summary
At the Dunstable workhouse, the boys draw lots to decide who will ask for more food, and Oliver Twist draws the tangled one. Mr. Bumble drags him before the governors, then takes him through the streets to be sold as an apprentice, and the undertaker Mr. Sowerberry buys him. Noah Claypole, the undertaker's other apprentice, speaks against Oliver's mother, and Oliver is locked in the cellar, where he finds the window grate unlocked. A week later he arrives in London, and the Artful Dodger leads him to Fagin, who drills a gang of boys in picking pockets. Nancy, Bill Sikes's girlfriend, comes to the hideout for money, and Fagin then sends the boys off for the day, with Oliver going out beside Dodger and Charley Bates.

- Ron Moody almost turned down playing Fagin because he found Dickens's portrayal 'an unfair, unpleasant image of Jewish people,' and only agreed once he decided to reinvent the character as a comic clown rather than Dickens's villain.
- Producer John Woolf recommended Oliver Reed for the role of Bill Sikes to director Carol Reed without realizing the two men were actually nephew and uncle.
- Oliver! remains the last G-rated film to win the Best Picture Oscar; it was also the last movie musical to win the award until Chicago in 2002, and the last British film to win until Chariots of Fire in 1981.
- Oliver! and Columbia's other Best Picture nominee that year, Funny Girl, together earned 19 Academy Award nominations, the most a single studio has ever received for musicals in one year.
