For the first time in two thousand years, the Moon lines up with the planets, and Dr. Anton Phibes comes out of suspended animation. He plans to carry his dead wife Victoria to Egypt, where the River of Life is said to promise eternal life to those who reach it. But the papyrus map that points the way has gone missing, and Darius Biederbeck, kept alive for centuries by a special elixir, wants the river for himself and Diana, his lover. Phibes and Vulnavia, his silent assistant, retrieve the map from Biederbeck's house and set sail for Egypt, with Inspector Trout and Superintendent Waverley following after them.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- American International Pictures planned to replace Vincent Price with Robert Quarry once Price's contract expired, and Price learned of it at a publicity event in England when a publicist asked how he felt about being replaced by Quarry.
SPOILER
The studio insisted that Vulnavia return for the sequel, even though the character dies in the first Phibes film and original actress Virginia North was pregnant at the time, so Valli Kemp was cast as a replacement.- Producer Heyward brought in Robert Blees to co-write the script, but Blees and director-co-writer Robert Fuest disagreed so often that Heyward had to mediate between them.
- Even though its budget was slightly higher than the first film's, parts of the script had to be cut for money, including a pyramid that was to have several levels of traps and be flooded with boiling oil at the end.
- For its U.S. release the film was slightly edited, with a few seconds trimmed from some murder scenes to remove the most gruesome parts so it could be released with a PG rating.
