Plot summary
Ten orphans from the local orphanage spend each Christmas night at the home of Rosie Forrest, a wealthy American widow who settled in England. The children call her Auntie Roo. She is still grieving her daughter Katharine, who died in an accident, and she pays a medium, Mr. Benton, for séances meant to reach the girl's spirit; Benton splits his fee with the butler Albie, and the maid Clarine speaks down the dumbwaiter shaft in a child's voice during the sittings. Christopher Coombs and his younger sister Katy are not among the ten chosen, so they make their way to the house, and Auntie Roo welcomes them, struck by how much Katy resembles Katharine.
