Plot summary
Kay Chandler is a congresswoman from New Hampshire campaigning to keep her seat, and Dutch Van Den Broeck is a police sergeant assigned to internal affairs. Dutch's wife works as a fashion editor; Kay's husband Cullen is a lawyer, and the two have a teenage daughter. A flight bound for Miami crashes just after takeoff, and both spouses are among the dead. Peyton's employer says she was never sent to Miami, and the airline lists no passenger by her name. Dutch decides his wife must have been on the plane as another man's wife, and his inquiry places her beside Cullen. He brings what he has learned to Kay, who fears a scandal before the vote and tells him to stay away.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Warren Adler's novel took 15 years to reach the screen. Dustin Hoffman got CBS Theatrical Films to buy it in the 1980s so he could star, then turned down draft after draft and quit, and in the early 1990s Kevin Costner was set to star with James L. Brooks directing before that collapsed too.
- The Boeing 737 crash that sets the story going was modeled on a real disaster: Air Florida Flight 90, a 737-200 that went down after taking off from Washington National Airport bound for Florida.
