Plot summary

Lieutenant David Halloran flies B-25 bombers with the United States Army Air Forces from England during the Second World War. A chance meeting on Hanover Street brings him together with Margaret Sellinger, an English nurse, and the pair arrange to see each other again there two weeks later. Margaret is married and says nothing about it, and an affair follows. Her husband, Paul Sellinger, once a teacher, now works in British intelligence. On a bombing run over occupied France, David's bomber is hit in an engine, though the fire is put out, and his bombardier, Cimino, asks him to release the bombs early and turn for home; David refuses until they reach the target.

Ford said he accepted the role “because I had never played a love scene in all my years in the movies” and thought the part would help him grow, but he hated making the film from start to finish, never saw it, and said he would never pay to see it.
Hyams was offered an absolute fortune to sell the script without directing it, and he was running out of money with a wife and two babies; he turned the money down after his wife told him “if you sell that script I'm going to leave you”.
Kristofferson dropped out of the film and Harrison Ford, then in Europe working on Force 10 from Navarone with Robert Shaw, was persuaded to take the lead role; Bujold decided to leave as well and was replaced by Lesley Anne Down.
The aerial sequences were mostly filmed at the by then-disused Bovingdon airfield using five North American B-25 Mitchell bombers flown over to England from the USA specially for the filming, and the simulated flak bursts on the bombing run, shot at Little Rissington, were provided by current British AA gunners.
The typical medium bomber used by the Eighth Air Force based in England was the Martin B-26 Marauder, but the film-makers were forced to use the B-25 instead because so few B-26 Marauders remained in existence.
