Plot summary
Adaline Bowman is born in San Francisco on New Year's Day in 1908. She marries Clarence James Prescott in 1929, and their daughter, Flemming, is born three years later. Clarence is killed in 1937 during the building of the Golden Gate Bridge. Ten months on, driving to her parents' beach cottage, Adaline crashes into a ravine and dies in a freezing lake; a lightning strike on the car revives her, and from then on she does not age.

- Katherine Heigl was cast as the title character in May 2010 but withdrew that November, later saying her withdrawal was the result of her recent adoption of a daughter; Natalie Portman was offered the lead in August 2011 and told Entertainment Weekly she had declined.
- Gabriele Muccino was in talks to direct in February 2011, replacing Tennant, with the film retitled from The Age of Adaline to simply Adaline; Isabel Coixet was announced instead in May 2012, before Lee Toland Krieger was reported as the actual director in October 2013.
- For the scenes in which Adaline walks up to the San Francisco Public Library, the exterior shot of the library building was actually filmed at the Vancouver Art Gallery in British Columbia.
- Anamorphic lenses and minimal use of steadicams were employed to give greater authenticity to the scenes set in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, while Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and How to Marry a Millionaire inspired the period color tone and saturation.
- Rob Simonsen scored the film, but Lana Del Rey contributed a song titled "Life Is Beautiful" that features in the trailer and was left out of both the film itself and the soundtrack album.

A voiceover explains that the jolt from the defibrillator restarted Adaline's aging process, and she smiles, realizing that she is now able to grow old with Ellis.
