Plot summary
In 1890s California, Buck, a large, good-natured dog of Saint Bernard and Scotch Shepherd stock, lives a comfortable life at the Santa Clara home of Judge Miller. One night he is taken from the property and shipped north. In Alaska, the frontiersman John Thornton drops a harmonica that Buck picks up for him, and the dog is then sold to Perrault and his partner Francoise, who run mail across the Yukon by dog sled. Perrault hopes Buck will help the team reach the depot by a deadline. Buck meets the other dogs, among them a husky named Spitz, who leads the pack, and pulls Francoise from the ice when she falls through it.
