Plot summary
In 2049, Los Angeles still runs on replicant labor. K, a Nexus-9 replicant, works as a blade runner, tracking down older models that have gone rogue. Sent to retire Sapper Morton at a protein farm, K notices a flower beside a dead tree and has the ground scanned. A buried chest holds the bones of a female replicant who died in childbirth, proof that replicants can reproduce. Lieutenant Joshi fears the knowledge would tear the city apart. She orders K to destroy the evidence and to find and retire the child. The bones carry a serial number that leads K to the Wallace Corporation, and to an audio record linking the woman, Rachael, with Rick Deckard, a blade runner who vanished thirty years ago. Wallace, who wants replicant reproduction for his own ends, sets his enforcer Luv to follow K.

- A scene set in the Blade Runner universe was cut from Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One. Spielberg had sought copyright approval during the filming of Blade Runner 2049, which Alcon's producers refused as they feared the explicit reference would affect their commercial prospects, so he replaced it with a scene based on The Shining.
- Jared Leto wore custom opaque contact lenses to work the set completely blind. Villeneuve recalled that Leto entered the room walking very slowly with an assistant: "It was like seeing Jesus walking into a temple. Everybody became super silent, and there was a kind of sacred moment."
- Villeneuve considered David Bowie, one of the franchise's core influences, for the part of Niander Wallace until the musician died months prior to filming. He and the producers then looked at Jared Leto, fresh off Suicide Squad, as they felt he exuded Bowie's rockstar sensibility.
- An early cut of the film was four hours long. Villeneuve described that version as "quite strong" but at times "too self-indulgent", prefers the shorter final cut as "more elegant" even though Ridley Scott finds it too long, and says he will not show the four-hour version to anyone.
- The filmmakers frequently fell behind schedule, and a subcontractor employed by Origo Studios was killed by falling debris while dismantling one of the sets.
