Plot summary
After the German fortress on Navarone is destroyed, Major Keith Mallory and Sergeant Donovan Miller are given a new task: find the German spy who betrayed that mission. Intelligence believes he is alive and has joined the Yugoslav Partisans, and Mallory and Miller are the only men who could identify him. They are sent along with Force 10, an American commando outfit under Lieutenant Colonel Mike Barnsby, who resents having them. Force 10 has orders of its own, which the two are not told. The unit takes a Royal Air Force bomber, joined by Weaver, an American army medical sergeant who has slipped away from military police custody, and heads for Yugoslavia.

- The bridge over the Tara River, the target of the commando operation in the film, was really destroyed by partisans in 1942, and the original engineer who built the bridge, Lazar Jauković, was involved in the operation to destroy it.
- President Tito of Yugoslavia authorised his government to assist the production, providing 2,000 soldiers as extras as well as uniforms, equipment and several Yugoslavian army T-34 tanks, and he visited the set himself.
- Three producers of the film, Carl Foreman, Sidney Cohn and Oliver Unger, were dead, but their estates and surviving producer Peter Gettinger sued Sony Pictures; a May 2008 trial in the New York Supreme Court awarded them more than 30 years of funds withheld by Columbia Pictures, and Sony's appeal failed in 2009.
- Shaw said during filming that he was seriously thinking this might be his last film, that he no longer had anything real to say and could not remember the last film he enjoyed making; he died of a heart attack in August 1978, before Navarone was released.
- Caroline Munro said she was offered the female lead in the film but turned it down because the part involved too much nudity.
- By the time filming was to start, 17 years after the original, Peck and Niven were considered too old for their roles and the decision was made to recast.
