Plot summary
Humanity is still preparing for war with the Formics, the alien race that attacked Earth and killed millions. For fifty years the International Fleet has trained gifted children as the commanders of a new fleet. Colonel Hyrum Graff and Major Gwen Anderson take notice of Ender Wiggin's aptitude in simulated space combat, and he is recruited into Battle School. Graff treats him as extraordinary, and the other cadets ostracize him. Squads compete in zero-gravity matches in the Battle Room, where Ender devises strategies older students had not considered. Assigned to Salamander Army under Commander Bonzo Madrid, who forbids him to train with the squad, Ender is coached privately by Petra Arkanian. Anderson worries about the psychological cost to the boy.

- Orson Scott Card spent the 1980s and 1990s turning Hollywood down, refusing to license Ender's Game whenever creative control became an issue. Only after he co-founded Fresco Pictures in 1996 did he decide to write the screenplay himself.
- Card's own casting ideas went in strange directions. In a 1998 interview he floated turning Colonel Hyrum Graff into a woman played by a dry comic such as Janeane Garofalo or Rosie O'Donnell, and suggested Andre Braugher or Will Smith for Mazer Rackham.
- The group Geeks OUT called for a boycott of the film in July 2013 over Orson Scott Card's views on homosexuality and same-sex marriage, and other groups in the media took up the call.
- Ender's Game was the first film to sell fans 3D-printed replicas built from the actual 3D assets used in production, through a tie-up between Summit Entertainment and the printing service Sandboxr.
