Plot summary
Sabrina Fairchild's father is chauffeur to the Larrabees, a wealthy and prominent family on Long Island. She has been in love with David, the younger son, a playboy who has never worked and who has never noticed her, while his elder brother Linus runs the family company and gives it his whole life. The brothers' mother, Maude, arranges for Sabrina to go to Paris to work at Vogue, and she comes home poised and changed. David, who is engaged to Elizabeth Tyson, a business magnate's daughter, fails to recognize her at first and is soon taken with her. Linus and Maude fear that the engagement, and a merger with the Tysons worth a billion dollars, could be at risk.

- Screenwriter Barbara Benedek did not set out to remake Sabrina at all; producer Scott Rudin noticed her original 1993 script unintentionally resembled Billy Wilder's 1954 film, and only after he pointed this out did she watch the original and deliberately rework it into this contemporary version.
- Winona Ryder declined the title role and Gwyneth Paltrow, fresh from securing a lead in David Fincher's Seven, auditioned, before Sydney Pollack narrowed dozens of candidates to three finalists: Juliette Binoche, English ballerina Darcey Bussell and Julia Ormond, whom the consensus at Paramount ultimately favoured.
- Sydney Pollack confirmed that Tom Cruise was interested in playing David Larrabee, partly for the prospect of working with Harrison Ford, but his salary demands proved prohibitive; reports that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was under consideration never led to a meeting with Pollack.
- In a 2023 interview, Harrison Ford admitted he ultimately felt miscast as Linus Larrabee, calling the shoot the most difficult of his career, even harder than the notoriously grueling production of Blade Runner.
- Instead of a Beverly Hills stand-in like the original film used, the remake shot the Larrabee mansion at the real Salutation estate in Glen Cove, a 45-room home built around 1929 for Junius Spencer Morgan III, son of J. P. Morgan Jr., which was still a private residence when filming took place there.
