Plot summary
Robin Monroe, an editor at a New York fashion magazine, is spending a week on Makatea with her boyfriend, Frank Martin, who proposes on their first night there. Then her boss Marjorie calls her to Tahiti to oversee a fashion shoot, and Robin hires Quinn Harris, a cargo pilot who lives on the island, to fly her. Mid-flight, a thunderstorm damages the plane's radio, and Quinn sets it down on a deserted island, where the landing gear breaks on a rock. Quinn and Robin are stranded with no working transmitter. They dislike each other, but getting off the island will take both of them.

- More than two decades later Anne Heche claimed she had been dropped from the film, after taking Ellen DeGeneres to a premiere, until Harrison Ford intervened and told her, "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn who you're sleeping with. We're gonna make the best romantic comedy there is."
- Anne Heche's casting was confirmed just days after she publicly held hands with girlfriend Ellen DeGeneres at a movie premiere, prompting one Hollywood agent to call the film "an important test case" and say there had never before been a case of an actress this openly in a same-sex relationship being asked to headline a heterosexual romance.
- Anne Heche said her career suffered in the wake of the film's release: she had been in a relationship with Ellen DeGeneres for three-and-a-half years and the stigma attached to it was so bad that she was fired from her multi-million dollar picture deal and did not work in a studio picture for 10 years.
- The crash scene of the de Havilland Beaver was performed with a Huey helicopter suspending the unmanned aircraft on a 200 ft cable with the engine running, and Harrison Ford, a certified pilot, did his own flying in the film after fulfilling the insurance company's training requirements.
- Ivan Reitman sparked further publicity when he told an interviewer that Anne Heche's relationship "will do the movie some harm"; Heche later recalled confronting Reitman over the remarks, and he said they were taken out of context.
