John Miljan
Biography
John Miljan was an American actor whose more than 200 screen credits spanned 1924 to 1958. Born in Lead in 1892, he started in Hollywood in 1923 and became known for smooth-talking villain roles, a style popularized by Ward Crane and carried on by Miljan after Crane died in 1928. His first sound work came with the promotional trailer for The Jazz Singer (1927), inviting audiences to the landmark film. He later moved into imposing, authoritative parts such as executives and military officers. He was best remembered as General Custer in Cecil B. DeMille's The Plainsman (1936). DeMille also cast him in Samson and Delilah (1949) as the Danite elder Lesh Lakish and in The Ten Commandments (1956) as a blind Israelite grandfather. Miljan died in 1960.
