John Travers, a U.S. marshal, rides with Yak, his Indian sidekick, hunting wanted criminals in the West. Calling himself the Lone Rider, Travers waits at a stagecoach and captures the two highwaymen who try to rob it, and rescues Anita Matlock, who is riding in it. She is traveling to the ranch of her uncle, Matt Matlock, a town leader. The driver is hurt and the passengers ride into town, where the citizens gather. Al Davis, made sheriff that very day, is shot down by a sniper. Travers hides his badge and offers to serve as sheriff in his place. A gang obeying a figure called the Shadow moves against the town.
