Roy Rogers

Biography

Roy Rogers was an American actor and singer who became one of the most popular Western stars of his era. Born Leonard Franklin Slye in Cincinnati, he first performed with the Sons of the Pioneers, which he co-founded and recorded for Decca. Republic Pictures later renamed him Roy Rogers and cast him in the lead of Under Western Stars (1938), turning him into a matinee idol and a rival to Gene Autry. He went on to appear in nearly 90 films, including a supporting role in Dark Command (1940), and exhibitors repeatedly named him the top Western star in annual polls. His self-titled radio program ran for nine years, and from 1951 to 1957 he hosted The Roy Rogers Show on television. His productions often included sidekicks such as George Gabby Hayes. He was the only country singer elected twice to the Country Music Hall of Fame and received four separate stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
