Plot summary
New Hampshire, 1840. Jabez Stone is a poor farmer whose bad luck keeps him broke, and his neighbors want him to join a grange so they can help one another. Congressman Daniel Webster, famed as a lawyer and orator, is writing legislation meant to keep farmers out of the hands of loan sharks. After a string of mishaps, Jabez declares he would sell his soul for two cents, and the Devil appears, calling himself Mr. Scratch. He offers seven years of prosperity and good luck in return for Jabez's soul, and shows him a hoard of Hessian gold until Jabez signs. The money pays off his debts. Jabez also meets Webster, whom his wife's family counts as a friend, and the two become friends, while Mr. Scratch works on Webster with an offer of his own.
